April weather recap: warmer, with one very wet day

April 3, compared to other days last month, stood out for being the wettest.

It will go down as one of the soggiest days in Waterloo Region with 78.8 mm of precipitation that included rain, and an unpleasant overnight wintery mix.

Flood watches, and warnings were issued right across the Grand River Watershed, including in Kitchener and Cambridge. It marked the rainiest single day since January 11, 2020, when 79.6 mm fell from the sky.

All this according to data from the E.D. Soulis weather station at the University of Waterloo.

In its monthly recap, the weather station noted April started cooler, hence that wintery mix on April 3. In fact, 2.5 cm of snow fell during the spring month.

However, the weather station added in the latter half of the month, we warmed up slightly, with one day reaching nearly 30 C.

“The overall temperature was a little over 2 C warmer than average, making it the warmest since 2017 and the third warmest in the over 25-year history of the E.D. Soulis weather station.”
