A fatal townhouse fire in Guelph is not considered suspicious.
The fire was reported Wednesday just before 7 a.m. on Sunset Road and crews from five stations responded to the area. When firefighters arrived to the scene, two occupants had self-evacuated but two others were trapped inside.
A 41-year-old man was extricated from the basement without vital signs and pronounced dead.
A 40-year-old woman was rescued from the first floor and sent to a Hamilton hospital with serious injuries. She remained in critical condition as of Friday.
A dog was also rescued from the home.
The Ontario Fire Marshal was called in to investigate the fatal fire, alongside Guelph police and the Guelph Fire Department.
On Friday, police said the fire was deemed not suspicious.
Deputy Chief of Operations with the Guelph Fire Department, Steven Goode, confirmed the cause of the fire remains unknown.
No damage estimate has been released but Goode said it was limited to one residence, primarily impacting the basement.
