Jeep seen driving in Speed River near Hanlon, charges laid

Police in Guelph have charged a driver from that city after reports he was driving his vehicle, intentionally, in the Speed River.

Around 10:00 a.m. Wednesday, police said a witness saw two men in a Jeep driving on the pedestrian path at the Silvercreek Skatepark on Wellington Street West before taking the vehicle into the Speed River.

“The driver intentionally drove into the Speed River and continued for approximately 600 metres,” said police.

“Officers located the Jeep still half in the river under the Hanlon Expressway.”

A 53-year-old man from Guelph has since been charged with careless driving. He was also charged with failing to display two licence plates.

Police make no mention of any injuries.
