Roundabout work to close Fountain and Maple Grove Road intersection

As work continues to install a roundabout at the intersection of Fountain Street and Maple Grove Road, the Region of Waterloo is warning of a weekend closure that will be required for the next stage of construction.

Beginning on Friday, that intersection will be fully closed to remove temporary traffic signals, while also allowing for the installation of new pavement markings in the newly-installed roundabout.

Closures will roll out on Friday around 10 p.m., with an expected partial reopening by 10 p.m. on Sunday. On Monday, the intersection is expected to open to traffic as a temporary, single lane roundabout.

That single lane roundabout will allow the flow of traffic for roughly 3 to 4 weeks, with an expected full reopening over the winter of 2024 or early 2025.

The work will continue, however; construction is expected to begin at that new roundabout once again for surface paving and final touches in spring of 2025, with full completion in the early summer of that year.

Motorists that regularly commute through the area may be familiar with the delays that are regularly present due to that roadwork. While the closure is in place this weekend, drivers are encouraged to use Cherry Blossom Road and Boxwood drive to detour around the area.

You’re also warned that travel through the area during construction could result in traffic moving on a gravel surface. Sidewalks will remain accessible.
