WRDSB changes plans, closing schools for total solar eclipse

By CityNews Kitchener Staff

The Waterloo Region District School Board (WRDSB) has announced that its schools will be closed on Monday, Apr. 8.

The public school board said it made the decision after listening to feedback from the WRDSB community, including staff and families.

The WRDSB was planning to keep its schools open but there were concerns raised because students would be walking home during the total solar eclipse.

On Wednesday, the school board confirmed it was changing course and that Monday will now be an asynchronous day of learning for students.

“We recognize the challenges this change for April 8 may cause some families, and are especially sorry about those who will need to make alternative child care arrangements,” read a notice from the WRDSB. “We continue to hope that students will have the opportunity to take advantage of the once-in-a-lifetime experience.”

WRDSB staff will still be expected to attend their work location on Apr. 8 as scheduled.
