Blackberry releases latest Global Threat Intelligence Report

Blackberry has released its Global Threat Intelligence Report for the last quarter of 2023.

The company said between September 1 and December 31, they stopped over 5.2 million cyberattacks against entities that use their security systems. The company reports to have stopped 31 attacks per minute on average, an increase of 19 per cent from their last report.

Their team also found an increase of 27 per cent in novel malware prevented by its AI-powered cybersecurity systems, up to 3.7 samples a minute.

“We’re consistently seeing increased volumes of attack in highly lucrative industries using novel malware,” said Ismael Valenzuela, vice president of Threat Research and Intelligence at BlackBerry in a press release.

“Novel malware typically indicates specific motivations from threat actors towards particular attack targets with intent to evade defenses, which are often based on static signatures. We’ve reached a pivotal point where traditional detection methods alone are not enough to combat this increasingly complex problem. AI is already being weaponized by malicious entities, so it must equally be the dominant tool for detection and defense.”

The majority of attacks, 62 per cent, were against critical infrastructure, such as government, healthcare, communications, and financial institutions. 33 per cent of the attacks were against commercial enterprises, such as retail, wholesale trade, and capital goods.

The top three countries that saw attacks stopped were the United States, Australia, and Japan. The top three countries that had unique malware stopped were the United States, South Korea, and Japan. Canada saw fewer attacks in the quarter and fell from second to fifth in attacks stopped while remaining in fifth for unique malware samples stopped.
