September in Waterloo Region uncharacteristically dry says UW Weather Station

By CityNews Kitchener Staff

September was very hot and very dry according to the University of Waterloo (UW) Weather Station.

In September, the region experienced the hottest day of the entire year at 32 degrees Celsius (C) and three days above 30 C.

On average, the daily temperature was nearly a full degree above the average for the month at 22.9 C.

University of Waterloo weather station coordinator Frank Seglenieks explained the reasoning behind the September heat and dryness.

“We didn’t get caught in the jetstream, which pulls a lot of storms our way. Instead we had a lot of high pressure and that beautiful weather we’ve been having.”

In terms of precipitation, September saw only 18 millimetres (mm) of rainfall making it the fourth driest month in the region’s history. More than half of the total rainfall came on the 12th, with 12 mm falling. The region hasn’t experienced a September this dry since 1969.

When asked about the future, Seglenieks said these hot and dry conditions will likely become more common.

“If we look at the last 10 years, certainly they’ve been getting warmer. It is something we would probably see if we continued this pattern.”
