21 new seniors’ units added to Ayr apartment complex

There are now 21 new units for seniors in Ayr's Kirkwood Apartments complex.

Monday marked the official opening of the expansion and saw a number of federal, provincial, and local officials attend the building at 191 Stanley Street.

The project involved expanded the existing complex with a mix of one- and two-bedroom apartments for Ayr seniors.

North Dumfies Mayor Sue Foxton said 11 of the 21 units are defined as affordable.

The project received over $3 million in provincial and federal funding.

The region and North Dumfries contributed nearly $600,000, and the Ayr and District Citizens Association pitched in around $424,000 in land and cash equity.

Regional Chair Karen Redman said access to affordable housing is “one of the most pressing challenges” across Waterloo Region.

“The funding in support of Kirkwood Apartments will go a long way in ensuring stability and safety for people at risk of homelessness or struggling with other challenges such as mental health or disability,” said Kitchener-Conestoga MPP Mike Harris.

“”Everyone deserves a safe place to call home. Today’s announcement is another important step in the right direction and will go a long way to support seniors in Ayr with housing that meets their needs,” said Minister of Housing and Diversity and Inclusion Ahmed Hussen.

Ayr and District Citizens Associations owns and operates the building.

Residents already moved into the complex's new addition in December 2020.
