Mexico army destroys explosives found outside refinery

MEXICO CITY — Mexico’s army says that explosives have been found inside a pickup truck parked outside a refinery in the central state of Guanajuato.
An army spokesperson said late Thursday that soldiers safely destroyed the devices.
Guanajuato has been a focus of President Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador’s fight against fuel theft.
The administration had initially characterized the explosives in the city of Salamanca as fake, but the army later confirmed they were real even though they did not present a danger. It did not explain why.
A message allegedly from the leader of a fuel theft ring in Guanajuato threatening Lopez Obrador was also found in the area.
Lopez Obrador said Friday he would not be intimidated, although the incident raised new questions about his safety since he does not use bodyguards.
