Community gathers in Kitchener to support refugees

A large crowd gathered into downtown Kitchener Tuesday in support of refugees.
Regional Chair Ken Seiling announced $25,000 from the Region would go towards the Mennonite Central Committee’s Syrian Refugee support. This follows Kitchener council approving a motion to donate $10,000 to the campaign.
Josh Hissa with Mennonite Central Committee says Waterloo Region has a long history of supporting refugees.
“Back in the 1920s, Mennonite Central Committee – including people in this Region – supported refugees in incredible need in the Ukraine, many of whom then relocated to this Region and play a huge part in our communities here today.”
“Part of the fabric of who we are as a community is welcoming refugees.”
The event was held for community members to express solidarity and share ways of supporting the hundreds of thousands refugees impacted by the crisis in Syria.
