Construction starts up again along Highway 7/8 starting tonight

Beginning at 8 p.m. Friday, crews will be demolishing the westbound structure at Homer Watson Boulevard in Kitchener, which will have the road closed between Ottawa Street and Hoffman Street until 6 a.m. Monday morning.
The work is to continue the ongoing process of replacing and widening the expressway between Fischer Hallman Road and Courtland Avenue which began in late 2011.
Spokesperson with the Ministry of Transportation, Liane Fischer, tells 570 News similar construction has already taken place along the expressway in previous years with minimal disruption to neighbours and expects this stage to be similar.
“The Westmount and Courtland structures have been through this process already. Certainly if neighbours have any concerns they can phone the ministry or the the contractor but I think the people in the area are used to how things have been going with this project to widen Highway 7/8.”
The Highway 7/8 ramps at Homer Watson and Ottawa have already been closed to allow for this weekend’s construction and are scheduled to remain closed until June.
Starting April 17th, Ottawa Street will be closed between Kehl Street and Homer Watson Boulevard until April 20th to complete further demolition to the bridge.
Fischer says there are still a few steps that need to be completed before the $96,115,878 dollar Highway 7/8 project is completed.
“This year, median work and high mast lighting and signs will be installed and work will wrap up for the season in November. Next year what remains is some surface paving through the projects limits and we expect to see the whole thing done by summer 2016.”
More construction is on the horizon for area highways as work is scheduled in to begin in May on the much anticipated Highway 7 expansion which is expected to span five construction season.
