Drunk driver from Elmira stopped by police in McDonald’s drive-through

Police in Guelph have charged an Elmira man in his late forties after he was allegedly found to be driving drunk while going the wrong way through a local drive-through.

Sunday at 11:45 p.m., police were called to the McDonald’s at Watson Parkway North and Eastview Road where they found the vehicle.

Police allege that same driver had been involved in at least one hit-and-run collision before stopping for his snack.

“Staff reported a male in a heavily-damaged car had entered the drive-through via the exit,” said police.

“Investigation revealed the driver had rear-ended an SUV at the intersection of Victoria Road North and Eramosa Road and then fled.”

Officers on scene blocked the SUV in and noted the driver had “a strong odour of alcohol on his breath and was unsteady on his feet.”

Police said the same driver may have also been involved in a second crash earlier that evening. Anyone with information is asked to reach out to police.

A 49-year-old man from Elmira has since been charged with impaired and dangerous driving, as well as failing to stop after a crash.
