Woolwich Township issues press release

In response to a call out alarm at 1:45am this morning, a total of 40 firefighters from four Woolwich Fire Department stations responded to a fire at the main market building at the St. Jacobs Farmers Market. The 24,000 square foot wood construction building, which houses around 60 market vendors, has been deemed a total loss by Fire Department officials. Firefighters quickly reached the market following the callout, and began controlling the blaze from spreading to other areas of the market. The cause of the fire has not yet been determined and the Ontario Fire Marshall has been contacted.
There were no injuries as a result of the blaze and initial damage estimates are well over a million dollars with no clear indication yet as to what specific losses for market vendors will come in at.
More details will be available following investigation from the office of the Ontario Fire Marshall.

The Township of Woolwich will work with the community and the owners to help re-establish the market as soon as possible”.
