Waterloo man facing impaired charges after crash at Conestogo Lake

OPP say a crash involving a personal watercraft at Conestogo Lake has led to impaired-related charges for a Waterloo man.

Emergency officials responded to a reported single-watercraft collision on the lake in Mapleton Township around 5 p.m. on Saturday.

The operator allegedly fled the scene before police arrived but they were located nearby after a search was conducted.

OPP say the man showed signs of impairment and he was arrested. The 51-year-old from Waterloo was transported to hospital with minor injuries.

A passenger was also taken to hospital and then airlifted to a trauma centre with serious, non-life-threatening injuries.

The Waterloo man is facing charges including operation while impaired and operation causing bodily harm.

Police are thanking the community members who reported the collision and are urging watercraft operators to adhere to safety regulations.

“NEVER boat impaired,” said Wellington County OPP in a release. “Unsafe practices on the water not only endangers the operator but also poses significant risks to swimmers and other individuals enjoying the water.”

The accused Waterloo man will appear in Guelph court on Oct. 6.
