Susan Galvao was elected as the federal NDP candidate for the Cambridge riding Sunday afternoon as an enthusiastic crowd of NDP supporters came out to vote for their representative. Joe Silva who was also seeking nomination surprised all when he withdrew at the last moment throwing his full support behind Susan.
Galvao is married to lifelong Cambridge resident Brian Galvao, and mother of two. Galvao has been very passionate about Cambridge and ran in the last two municipal elections. Her long list of community and humanitarian involvements include work with charities, schools and environmental organizations.
Galvao, a long-time Cambridge resident delivered an inspiring speech outlining the crisis facing middle class Canadians and the struggles of seniors. “We have watched as the middle-class is sentenced to obscurity”…. “Seniors can no longer choose to retire they are forced to continue working to keep their homes”. She stated “enough is enough”! “The current government talks about how great they are doing while we are watching plants close down, workers locked out and minimum wage being the new norm”.
Galvao also addressed the state of health care, social services and the environment. “We have watched social services that protect all citizens whittled away to nothing or worse yet two-tiered systems that make the rich, richer”… “We have seen the current government ignore serious environmental issues”.
Galvao encouraged all to get out and make a difference during this election. “If we all get together and throw a single stone in that water that ripple will turn into a wave and what a difference we can make”.
Galvao plans on delivering the NDP message that the party offers practical solutions for the middle class and promises to bring back the democratic process to Ottawa.
