Museum still hopeful funding will flow

Dreams of bringing a Titanic exhibit to the region are sinking as the Children’s Museum scrambles for new funding sources. CEO David Marskell says the $600,000 is needed so the museum can properly plan its programming and that means the Titanic exhibit has been postponed. Given the success of recent Jane Goodall, Andy Warhol and “Our Body” exhibits, Marskell says the Titanic people were anxious to add Waterloo Region as a stop on their current tour.
Marskell tells 570 News the museum is an integral part of this community and he would like to see it funded as such. Funding models for similar institutions operate on a “one third, one third, one third” basis, according to Marskell. That’s one third of funding from earned revenues, one third from fundraising and one third from municipal governments. He says at this point the region, the city of Kitchener and the city of Waterloo are still considering the museum’s request. And Marskell insists this request for funding did not come out of the blue. He says it dates back about three years as the museum looked ahead and saw the funding from many of its initial donors beginning to dry up.
The region is expected to discuss the funding request again at its meeting on March 24th.
