The biggest rooftop solar panel system in Canada is now on a roof in Cambridge.
The 200 by 400 foot array can generate a maximum 250 kilowatts — enough power for seventy homes — and will sell power back into the provincial grid.
The array sits on the roof of 1139 Industrial Road, owned by Towcon Holdings of Cambridge.
President of Towcon, Dave Walden, says the installation will total close to $2-million in the end, but he expects to make it all back in eight to ten years, and everything after that is profit.
Walden says if all goes according to plan, he’ll try solar arrays on the company’s other properties.
The array comes from Kitchener-based Canadian Solar Solutions.
President Milfred Hammerbacher tells 570 News they’ll throw the switch on the array later this month when final approval comes in from the Ontario Power Authority.
Hammerbacher says this is the first solar panel installation he’s done where the owner is expecting a financial investment return.
He says it’s great to see people’s faces when they realize they can make money and help the environment.
Hammerbacher says this array was set up in two weeks time.
