Workplace injury in St. Jacobs leads to fine for Home Hardware

By CityNews Kitchener Staff

Home Hardware Stores Limited has been fined $75,000 stemming from a workplace injury in St. Jacobs.

The incident happened at 34 Henry St. West in November 2023.

According to the Ministry of Labour, a worker responsible for the fire management system used a ladder to access the top of a water reservoir that was 10 feet above the ground.

While the worker was climbing back down, they slipped and fell off the aluminum shelf ladder and sustained critical injuries.

The Provincial Offences Court in Kitchener found the employee did not receive ladder safety training as part of their orientation.

Home Hardware Stores Ltd. plead guilty and in addition to the fine, the court imposed a 25 per cent victim surcharge.

The province says following the incident, the company provided ladder safety training for its employees.

Additional safety measures were also implemented, like requiring workers to have a spotter in place while they’re using a ladder, and replacing the aluminum shelf ladder with rolling staircase ladders that are equipped with guardrails and a standing platform.
