Two people from Cambridge are dead, and three other individuals are injured following a crash on Highway 401 in Mississauga on Wednesday morning, police say.

According to a post from Ontario Provincial Police on X, one vehicle rear-ended another in the eastbound express lanes near Dixie Road just before 9 a.m., as traffic was slowing down in the area.

Police say a man and a woman were pronounced dead at the scene. They have been identified as an 80-year-old male passenger and a 53-year-old female passenger, both from Cambridge, and were travelling in the vehicle that was struck from behind.

Three other people were taken to hospital with injuries, with at least one airlifted to a trauma centre in critical condition.

The eastbound express lanes of the 401 were closed from east of Mississauga Road to east of Dixie Road for several hours but reopened around 4 p.m.

People were stopped on the highway for several hours after a serious two-vehicle crash. (OPP West Region)
