Watermain break closes portion of busy Kitchener intersection

The Region of Waterloo warned of a closure in the Bridge Street East and Lancaster Street area of Kitchener this week.

A watermain break in the area Wednesday morning had the northbound lane of traffic through that stretch closed off.

Regional officials said temporary road repairs were required to get traffic flowing through that stretch, but more permanent repairs will be in the City of Kitchener’s hands, to be completed at a later date.

On Friday, the Region said Bridge Street would reopen in the area at 3 p.m.

Construction crews were already set up in the busy stretch between Kitchener and Waterloo.

Lancaster Street from Wellington Street to Bridgeport Road is currently undergoing road reconstruction to the tune of $16.4M. That work is set to last well into 2028.

The project includes new pedestrian and cycling access, improvements to GRT bus stops, and watermain, and storm and sanitary sewer replacements.

Lancaster Street West will stay closed to through traffic between Elizabeth Street and north of Union Street until the fall.

Details on that roadwork can be found here.
