Jeffrey Sloka’s accusers host ‘Funeral for Justice’ to combat acquittal

When the nearly five-year-long sexual assault case against former Kitchener Neurologist Jeffrey Sloka saw him acquitted on all 48 charges back in April, the case’s prosecuting parties were shocked by the decision.

Sloka’s former patients, along with the Sexual Assault Centre of Waterloo Region, have made public their frustrations with both the length and result of the court processes which led to the acquittal. Now, nearly 8 years after the first formal complaint, Sloka’s alleged survivors have arranged a ‘Funeral for Justice’ to grieve and call attention to the landmark ruling.

The event will feature a plethora of speakers, including some of Sloka’s former patients and representatives from local sexual assault organizations. Beginning at Knollwood Park at 7PM on Sunday, attendees will then travel to the Waterloo Region Courthouse, where the controversial acquittal ruling took place.

Brittany Wellington, co-organizer of Sunday’s Funeral for Justice event, told 570 NewsRadio that the gathering will be important to show support for the alleged survivors despite the ruling.

“We wanted to put together the vigil so that we can showcase the survivors, we can take back the space of the courthouse, and just have a place for people to come together since people have not been able to talk to one another and express their grief in this situation.”

Organizers are not referring to the event as a protest, but rather a ceremonial vigil which hopes to highlight what the parties involved see as an unjust decision.

“It’s important for the broader community to see that we have had enough as a community and as women,” said Wellington. “It would appear that people are not really taking survivors’ stories seriously”.
