Cambridge development gets a ‘yes’ from council but passionate ‘no’ from neighbours

Cambridge city council has approved a townhouse development on Blenheim Road despite the passionate objections from several residents.

The plan would see about 30 townhouses going up at 160 Blenheim Rd., in a green space near trees, wetlands, and the Devil’s Creek trail. Residents who live on the street spoke to councillors at Tuesday’s meeting about losing a precious green space and a place of peace and quiet to more housing.

Among those neighbours, Ruth Dixon told council, “Not every piece of land is equal.” She asked council to consider what would be lost if yet another piece of development goes forward.

From planning company MHBC, Dave Aston told council the change to the city’s official plan to allow the development would result in an actual increase in natural areas.

The staff report to council shows about 72 per cent of the land at the site would remain protected.

In the end, council voted 7-2 to let the project move forward – but it still requires site plan approval.
