Regional police are investigating what they believe is a public mischief call in Cambridge.
On March 16, officers responded to a home in the area of Eagle Street North and Concession Road for a reported shooting at 11:30 p.m.
When they arrived, police cleared the residence, and through the investigation, they believed the incident had not actually happened, which is why they opened a public mischief report.
It’s just the latest incident in a rising trend of fake reports police are encountering. Officials launched multiple swatting cases in the last month after a string of calls drained resources and prompted lockdowns at schools — all of which were deemed false by police.
“We take these reports very seriously and obviously have concerns with the evolution of these types of calls,” WRPS Constable Brad Hickey said previously.
The calls are causing disruptions to the community and tie up officials responding to the incident. Hickey noted these are complex investigations as the calls could come from anywhere in the world.
It isn’t just schools that are targeted by swatters, as the other recent investigations launched by WRPS involve reported residential shootings in the Westmount Road area of Kitchener, none of which had any merit.
