Yellow snowfall warning issued for Waterloo Region

Make sure you have a good shovel on hand as another major snowfall is expected for Waterloo Region.

Environment Canada has issued a yellow snowfall warning for the region, calling for between 10 to 20 cm of snow starting on Sunday morning, continuing throughout the day and tapering off into the evening.

570 meteorologist Rob Haswell said winds between 40 to 50 km/hr will be coming in from the east, causing potential blowing snow in some areas, making it a hazard for drivers.

“The wind will cause visibility to drop at times along with the heavier bursts of snow,” he said. “Obviously, travel will be very tricky with this system making its way through as the roads will be covered and the visibility will be near zero.”

As of 10 a.m., the E.D. Soulis Memorial Weather station at the University of Waterloo recorded 1.5 cm of snow had fallen.

Snow events

The City of Kitchener declared a snow event will take place starting at 11:59 p.m. starting Sunday night. Residents are banned from parking their vehicles on the road, and any vehicle found will be ticketed and/or towed. The city says the parking ban will be in effect for at least 24 hours.

The Town of North Dumfries has also declared a snow event. It will begin at noon on Sunday and continue until noon on Tuesday. Residents are asked to keep their vehicles off the road.

Snow event operations will come into place at 8 p.m. in Cambridge and hold until noon on Tuesday.

Precautions

Drivers are asked to take precautions if they are heading out, including slowing down and taking extra time to get to where they need to go.

It will still be very cold throughout the region on Sunday. The daytime high will be around -10 C, but the wind chill will make it feel much closer to -20.

If you are spending extra time outdoors, especially shoveling all the snow, be sure to take extra breaks and to watch for symptoms of extreme cold. Those include a change in colour in your fingers, shortness of breath, muscle soreness and chest pain.
