Victoria Street South closures shift in Kitchener

The region is warning drivers of a change in the closures put in place for construction at a busy stretch of Victoria Street South in Kitchener.

Beginning Monday at 7 a.m., closures will roll out on Victoria Street South on the east side of the intersections at Westmount and Fischer-Hallman roads. Those closures are expected to stretch through to the end of November, with the date of Nov. 28 shared by the Region of Waterloo.

Closures previously in place for Victoria traffic on the west sides of those intersections are expected to be lifted.

Drivers looking to get around the construction zones, heading west or east, are encouraged to use nearby Highland Road West. Temporary bus stops are also in place for Grand River Transit routes 12, 20 and 201.

Two-way traffic will still be flowing on Westmount Road and Fischer-Hallman Road through Victoria Street South for the extent of this work.

The region noted that this year’s work on Victoria Street South will conclude in early December, and it is expected to begin phase two in the spring with a focus on the stretch between Fischer-Hallman Road and Lawrence Avenue.

A $12 million project, improvements coming to Victoria after public feedback include separated bike lanes and sidewalk replacement between Lawrence and Westmount, pedestrian refuge islands and traffic median, upgraded traffic signals and transit stops, and more.
