Kitchener ‘Fairmount Home’ to provide inclusive living to those in need

On the morning of May 27, the ribbon-cutting ceremony took place to celebrate the opening of the new ‘Fairmount Home’ housing project, created by Sunbeam Community & Developmental Services.

For individuals living with developmental disabilities, a prolonged stay in a hospital is often an inevitable step required in receiving support services. However, according to Sunbeam’s CEO Brian Swainson, the transition from an extended stay in hospital to a permanent public residence can be crucial to facilitate.

“They don’t receive the social, the recreational, the engagement when they are in hospital that they really need to thrive. We provide that.”

Swainson went on to say, “Over the past 10 years, we’ve helped to discharge about 17 individuals from long hospital stays. They had about 44 years in hospital, those 17 individuals. So we’re really proud when we’re able to make those success stories happen.”

The project was supported through a $1.72 million capital investment from Ontario’s Ministry of Children, Community and Social Services.

Sunbeam’s Fairmount Home will provide residence to up to five individuals with developmental disabilities and dual diagnoses who require attentive support services usually provided by public hospitals.

Residents will also have access to an announced list of over 15 services and therapeutic amenities. These include a therapeutic swimming pool, a specialized dental clinic, an on-site social worker, a behavioural therapist, a registered dietician, and a speech language pathologist.

The home, located at 96 Fairmount Road in Kitchener’s Eastwood area, received a complete renovation as part of the new development project. In addition to interior renovation for provided services, the home also saw a completely refurbishment of its backyard, in order to give its residents on-site access to an outdoor space.
