Man strangled, struck by hammer in his Guelph home

Guelph police were called to a home in the city’s south end for a violent home invasion early Wednesday morning.
Officers were sent around 12:25 a.m. for a disturbance at an apartment building on Gordon Street. According to the press release, the victim was woken up by “the sound of someone smashing his air conditioner.”
When he went to the unit, he saw a man in his home holding a hammer. The victim was “struck in the face” with the tool and “briefly strangulated” before he was able to break free of the suspect’s grasp and run from the apartment.
When he was outside, he found that his vehicle was damaged extensively, police said, all the windows and lights were smashed. Police arrived at this point and arrested the man’s neighbour in connection with the incident.
The two men are known to each other, the release notes.
A 21-year-old is facing charges of break and enter, assault with a weapon, assault causing bodily harm and mischief over $1,000.
He was held in custody for a bail hearing set for July 8.
