Kitchener Toys ‘R’ Us store officially closed

The “For Sale” sign had been up since November last year, and the closing sales started back in January.

Now, the iconic Toys ‘R’ Us location on Fairway Road is officially closed.

Thursday marked the last day for shoppers to scan the bare-bones shelves and say goodbye to the building that has been a staple for local families for 40 years.

A sign on the door read, “To our loyal customers, THANK YOU for your support, kindness and trust. It has been our privilege to serve this community, and we are truly grateful for the memories we’re shared! Your Friend: Geoffrey”

Back in June, an Ontario court gave the company permission to split up and sell the business to three buyers, including its current owner who wants to keep running the chain or rebrand it.

The deals were an effort to help the beleaguered retailer pay off some of the millions in debt it accumulated in the run-up to filing for creditor protection in February.

Dozens of Toys “R’ Us locations have already been closed including the location at the Stone Road Mall in Guelph.
