Massive long weekend power outage due to fault at transformer station

While in the middle of the first heat wave of the season, nearly 13,000 people in Kitchener were without air-conditioners and fans.

A power outage hit just after 3 p.m. Monday, at the hottest time of the day, when temperatures reached 29 C, according to Environment Canada.

Enova Power officials said it was due to a fault at a transformer station that required complex repairs.

“We know it’s hot!” reads a social media post, “unfortunately, it isn’t a straightforward repair.”

The lights were back on for most customers by 7 p.m., with all power restored by 8 p.m.

At the peak of the outage, 12,937 customers were impacted.

The outage covered a massive stretch of the southwest end of Kitchener, bordered by Highway 7/8, Fischer-Hallman Road, Highway 401 and Highway 8.

That included numerous neighbourhoods such as Huron, Doon, Country Hills and parts of Rockway.

Enova Power did not have any power outages reported Tuesday morning.
