Kitchener gas station evacuated after police called about suspicious device

Police were taking no chances when they got a call about a suspicious device found at a Kitchener gas station.

A statement from the Waterloo Regional Police Service said the call came in around 8 p.m. on Tuesday, bringing officers out to the PetroCanada station on King Street near Sportsworld Crossing Road.

They found an item on one of the gas pumps, and as a precaution evacuated the station and the surrounding area.

The gas pumps were all turned off, and Kitchener firefighters were put on standby.

The WRPS Explosives Disposal Unit was brought in, and after they assessed the item, it was deemed to pose no risk.

Police said Wednesday morning there is no evidence the item was put there maliciously or to cause public alarm.
