Guelph man charged after two stolen vehicle crashes in the same day

A Guelph man is facing a list of charges after two separate crashes in Guelph, both involving stolen vehicles, and one just two hours after being released from police custody.

It all began just after 3 p.m. on Wednesday when officers in the Royal City responded to a reported crash on Stevenson Road North.

It’s alleged that the involved vehicle, a Honda Odyssey, had left the roadway and hit a tree, sustaining minor damage. An investigation later revealed that the vehicle had been stolen earlier in the day from an area in the city’s south end.

Upon arrival, police were informed that a witness had transported the driver of that vehicle to another address in downtown Guelph to get help. The driver, a 23-year-old Guelph man, was located around 4 p.m. by police and arrested for charges including:

  • Possessing stolen property over $5,000
  • Occupying a vehicle without consent
  • Driving while prohibited
  • Breaching a probation order

Police said that man was released with a scheduled court date.

Roughly two hours after the suspect was released from custody, around 11:35 p.m., officers responded to another stolen vehicle call, this time involving a Toyota taken from an address on Macdonell Street. The vehicle had been left running outside the business, and while the owner was inside, he spotted a man and a woman getting into his car.

It’s alleged that the owner ran outside and attempted to open a door, but the driver reversed and crashed into a bus, and then nearly struck the owner while fleeing the area.

That vehicle was found outside of Guelph on Thursday morning, and both parties were arrested, including the same man arrested in the earlier collision on Stevenson Road North.

That man will be returned to Guelph, and is now facing additional charges including theft of motor vehicle, dangerous driving and failing to stop after a collision.
