Teen in Guelph arrested after reports of pointing gun at strangers

A teenager was taken in custody by Guelph police after they received two reports over the weekend of a male pointing a handgun at strangers.
A man was walking around the area of Eramosa Road and Stevenson Street North at 9:25 p.m. on Friday when he saw the teen pointing a handgun in his direction, according to the release. The two people involved are unknown to each other.
Guelph police were then called to another neighborhood in that same area just before 2 p.m. on Saturday, where there were calls of someone pointing a handgun at nearby cars and houses.
The Guelph Police Service say they were able to locate the male, and arrested him at gunpoint.
Officers found the weapon and say it was a black pellet gun, which resembled a Glock handgun.
After being taken into custody, the teen was taken to hospital for a mental health assessment.
Guelph police have already voiced their concerns over replica guns, as the popular high school game “Senior Assassin,” gives high school students a target to eliminate with water guns.
“A lot of the water guns that we’re seeing are especially from a distance or at night are almost impossible to tell apart from real firearms,” Scott Tracey, civilian member of GPS, told CityNews.
Officiers responding to those calls have to treat them as legitimate until proven otherwise.
“Our officers simply can’t afford to assume that the weapon is not real because if it is, then obviously it can have deadly consequences for the officers and for the community,” Tracey said. “So they have to always respond to weapons calls, assuming that the weapon is real.”
