Tricky travel conditions continue Friday with more snow, dangerous cold

Bitterly cold Friday temperatures will usher in the most dangerous stretch of weather, with warnings that Saturday morning will bring life‑threatening wind chills. That will be followed by the next snowstorm to hit the GTA on Sunday.

After an afternoon commute of numerous collisions and hazardous travel conditions, Environment Canada issued a weather alert for more snow on Friday.

The weather authority called for 5 centimetres of additional snow. Once again, the afternoon drive through Waterloo Region could include quickly changing and deteriorating travel conditions.

“Blowing snow is producing near zero visibility at times, especially in open and exposed areas,” reads the weather alert. “Consider postponing non-essential travel until conditions improve.”

The windy conditions were a main issue on the Thursday drive. Traffic callers to the 570 NewsRadio newsroom said at times, they could barely see the lanes.

Snow events are still in place in Cambridge, Wilmot, Woolwich and Wellesley. They have since ended in Kitchener and in Waterloo.

The snowfall is expected to continue into the weekend. Carl Lam, 570 NewsRadio Meteorologist, said a massive system is moving in on Sunday with 15-25 cm of snow possible before Monday.

Temperatures will also be extremely cold.

Environment Canada has issued a yellow warning for cold as a result. The warning notes wind chill values will be near -30 to -33 Friday into Saturday.

The weather authority warns that extreme cold puts everyone at risk, with the potential for frostbite to develop within minutes.
