Snow removal in the Royal City could be put under the microscope in the coming months as Guelph looks to improve winter maintenance operations and integrate space for more public opinions following a wintery start to the season.
City of Guelph staff are set to present a recommendation to council that a review of winter maintenance operations should be completed as part of the annual audit plan.
“I can imagine that it will investigate not just the service on our roads and sidewalks but also bike or trail management and even the importance of accessibility access throughout the city, including transit stops and more,” said Guelph Mayor Cam Guthrie in a social media post on Wednesday.
Council came under fire from residents in November when $650,000 allocated to maintaining bike lanes during the winter months was removed from the annual budget. In response, Guthrie used his strong mayor powers to reinstate the funding in December.
“I want to thank our winter maintenance staff, they work hard and do their best,” added Guthrie. “Crazy storms lately have caused issues for sure. However, in my opinion, council needs to address the policies, options and frankly the budget allocation that goes into this service- I think we can and should have options to do better.”
Staff will present council the opportunity to approve the winter maintenance review at a meeting on Feb. 3.
Light snow remains in the forecast for Guelph for the remainder of the week.
