By Justin Koehler

An investigation is underway through Waterloo Regional Police Service (WRPS) following a dangerous hit-and-run in New Hamburg involving a 13-year-old pedestrian.

Officers said it happened on Wednesday, Nov. 12, in the early evening at around 5:50 p.m., at the corner of Union Street and Huron Street in one of the key parts of New Hamburg’s core.

That’s right between the Hartman Bridge and St. Peter’s Catholic Church in a posted 40 km/h zone.

Police said the 13-year-old was crossing Union Street when the driver in question turned the corner from Huron Street onto Union, striking the child in the process.

They add that the vehicle then continued moving, not stopping at the scene, and drove away, fleeing the scene.

Officers said the 13-year-old wasn’t severely hurt, but was still needing to be driven to hospital for treatment of their non-life-threatening injuries.

As for the driver, police are still searching for the vehicle in question and are now reaching out to members of the public for assistance.

They said they’re looking for a white sedan that likely has either front-end damage or a busted side mirror as a result of the collision.

WRPS is asking anyone who has additional details on the incident or spots the mentioned vehicle to reach out at 519-570-9777, extension 6399, or can remain anonymous by getting in touch with Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-8477.
