A scheduled meeting of Cambridge City Council won’t be held in person.
On Monday, the City of Cambridge announced that the council meeting set for Tuesday, Sept. 23, will take place virtually instead.
“This change follows an incident earlier today involving a disruptive member of the public,” reads a release from the City of Cambridge. “The City is taking proactive steps to ensure a safe and respectful environment for Council, staff, and community members.”
The Waterloo Regional Police Service (WRPS) later confirmed that they were contacted by security at Cambridge city hall after a threatening voicemail was left.
“Security advised police they would be placing the facility in a hold and secure,” said WRPS Public Information Officer, Melissa Quarrie, in an e-mail to 570 NewsRadio. “The involved community member has been trespassed from City of Cambridge properties and there are no grounds for any criminal charges at this time.”
Tuesday’s meeting will still begin at 6:30 p.m. and delegates are being given instructions on how to participate online.
Members of the public who were planning to physically attend the meeting are being encouraged to watch it live on YouTube instead.
The meeting at Cambridge city hall would have been the first with new mandatory bag checks, as the security measure takes effect as of Sept. 23.
