A multi-purpose recreation complex in Cambridge just received a multi-million-dollar investment.

Ontario is committing $19.5 million dollars from the Community Sport and Recreation Infrastructure Fund (CSRIF) for the construction of the 112,000-square-foot facility.

It’s being built on Wesley Boulevard and once complete, it will feature an aquatics centre, gyms, running tracks, fitness areas, and a public library.

“Today we’re celebrating a milestone that we thought would never get here,” said Cambridge Mayor Jan Liggett at a press conference held at the development site on Wednesday.

Minister of Sport, Neil Lumsden, was also on hand for the announcement. “These opportunities for us are about building communities,” Lumsden said. “It’s about strengthening the people within the community by giving them opportunities that they may not have had before with respect to sport and recreation.”

It’s not the only recreation project getting a funding boost, as the province is also investing $1 million from the CSRIF for both the Ayr Community Centre and the Preston Memorial Auditorium expansions.

“These facilities will serve as vibrant hubs. Both of our facilities, where residents of all ages can come together to stay healthy, to grow, and build those lasting relationships,” said Mayor Liggett.

A free grand opening event for the newly renovated Preston Memorial Auditorium is taking place Saturday, Sept. 27 from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m.
