Cambridge Rec Complex set to get big money from new gym sponsor

By Mark Douglas

When it comes to the multi-million dollar cost of building the new Cambridge Recreation Complex, getting a sponsor to pay for the naming rights for the gym is a slam dunk.

Elements Engineering Inc. is set to win the rights for the three FIBA-sized gyms at the Rec Plex at 655 Wesley Blvd., in southeast Galt.

A staff report coming to Cambridge council says the engineering firm will pay $150,000 over five years for the naming rights.

Signs with the company’s name will go up in and around the trio of International Basketball Federation gymnasiums.

The sponsorship is being set up through the city’s “Play it Forward” campaign, trying to raise $15-million to offset the $160 million costs of the Cambridge Recreation Complex, plus the Preston Auditorium and the Soccer Complex on Fountain Street.

The total cost for the Rec Plex is expected to be around $109 million, including $93 million for the building itself.

It is set to be completed by Fall 2026.

Council will vote on approving the naming rights on Tuesday.
