Cambridge council to vote on possible debt for accessible ball diamond

The potential for an accessible baseball diamond is up in the air at Cambridge council this week, after a major grant application fell through.

The Kin 1 Ball Diamond Accessibility Project at Riverside Park is estimated to cost $3,025,000. Those funds would cover improvements to the park including the development of accessible dugouts, pathways, bleachers, and artificial turf.

But the city’s application to the Jays Care “Field of Dreams” grant was denied.

Now, staff are recommending that council approve the project and for it to be fully funded by debt. In order to do that, the Region of Waterloo would also need to approve the use of the debt by-law to pay for it.

“This project delivers a one-of-a-kind accessible diamond within the Region of Waterloo and reinforces the City’s commitment to inclusive recreation,” the staff report says. “It showcases leadership in creating age- and ability-friendly infrastructure for residents and regional users alike.”

Staff note in the report to council that they will continue to seek grant opportunities, sponsorship and donations to support the project funding. There is also a fundraiser underway, through the Play It Forward Campaign.

If the project is approved, construction would begin right after the 2025 baseball season. It is expected to be complete by the summer of 2026.

The project was heavily pushed by members of the community, including the Buddy League. Council originally approved the conceptual design for the diamond back in October 2024. They also added a budget amendment for the project in November during the 2025 budget negotiations.

Council will meet on Tuesday to discuss funding options, with the public session portion opening at 6:30 p.m.
