It’s possible Waterloo Region could experience a severe thunderstorm to kick off the pseudo-long weekend.
Environment Canada is saying that conditions are “favourable” for the development of “dangerous thunderstorms” on Friday. The weather agency said that they could develop through the afternoon into the evening, warning that utility outages are possible.
“Be prepared for severe weather. If threatening weather approaches, take cover in a basement or interior room,” it said.
Wind gusts could be 90 to 110 km/h with heavy rainfall, which could cause flash flooding.
“Strong wind gusts can damage trees, buildings and overturn vehicles.”
This comes at the end week scorched by a heat wave and record-breaking temperatures.
“After a brief break from the heat and humidity, it’s going to be warm and humid as we close out June and head into July,” said 570’s Weather Specialist Allister Aalders. “Today’s high is 29 C with a humidex near 38 C. For the weekend, we see a bit of moderation on Saturday, 25 C, but then we’re back up to 29 C for Sunday, 28 C Monday.”
June 27 is also the first day of summer vacation for many of the students around Waterloo Region, and there are plenty of ways to start their summer vacation on a fun note.
On Friday, THEMUSEUM, the Ken Seiling Waterloo Region Museum, and the Schneider Haus National Historic Site are all hosting themed summer camp events.
At Centre in the Square in Kitchener, children can enjoy Sesame Street Live on Saturday starting at 2 p.m., and the adults can return in the evening for Jazz, War, and the Road to Peace, a world refugee day concert featuring Ukrainian jazz musicians.
Video game enthusiasts are taking over The Aud this weekend for the Call of Duty League Championships.
Looking ahead to Canada Day, temperatures are set to be warm at 26 C with a mix of sun and cloud and just a slim chance of showers.
