It did feel more like March across Waterloo Region last month, but new data shows the overall average temperature for May.
New data from the E.D Soulis Memorial Weather Station at the University of Waterloo shows in their monthly summary for May that the average high temperature was 18.9 degrees and the low was 7.5 degrees. These are in line with the long-term averages of 19.1 degrees and 7.3 degrees, respectively.
The maximum temperature for the month was 28 degrees, and the lowest was -0.9 degrees. The last time the temperature was below the freezing mark was on May 9.
The summary shows that last month was the wettest May since 2019, with a final precipitation total of 88.2mm. That brings the total precipitation for the year to 379.2mm, beating out the average of 340.2mm.
Looking to this week, 570 meteorologist Jill Taylor says we can expect rain on Monday with the bulk of it happening in the morning, with the potential for thunderstorms in the afternoon and evening. She said this will help dissipate any wildfire smoke coming from parts of the country, but it could come back later this week.
“The smoke could come from a number of wildfire sources, even the potential from Quebec,” said Taylor. “It’s not only the western fires, but some smoke from fires pretty much anywhere in Canada.”
The region can expect a chance of showers almost every day this week, and Taylor said there will be increasing humidity during the week before temperatures come down by the weekend.
