GRT worker strike could start May 1

A Grand River Transit (GRT) strike could be looming if no deal is reached between the Region of Waterloo and unionized workers.

The Region of Waterloo (ROW) confirmed Monday that negotiations are ongoing with Unifor Local 4304, which represents some GRT staff.

“We continue to work closely with Unifor and both parties are committed to reaching an agreement that is both competitive for GRT staff and affordable for residents,” said a ROW release.

The GRT workers will be in a legal strike position as of Friday, May 1.

It comes as the union announced last week that its members voted 93 per cent in favour of strike action as they continue to push for improvements to wages, scheduling, and benefits.

“Our members are proud to serve this community and we want to avoid any disruption,” said Unifor Local 4304 President, Heath Abbott. “We’re back at the bargaining table April 27-30, and we’re hopeful the Region and the union can work together to resolve outstanding issues before the May 1 strike deadline. We want to ensure we reach a fair agreement for our members. “

If a strike occurs, conventional GRT and MobilityPLUS service will not operate. However, ION trains will continue to run as they’re operated by Keolis.

Due to the uncertainty, GRT is advising monthly passholders may wish to cancel their auto-renewal ahead of April 25 in case there are disruptions in May.

A previous strike impacted GRT service in May of 2023.
