More speed cameras will be popping up in neighbourhoods across the region later this year.
A report coming to councillors at the Sustainability, Infrastructure, And Development Committee is calling for several changes to the region’s traffic bylaw, including adding 15 new Community Safety Areas.
The new areas include:
- Fairway Road North near Chicopee Hills Public School, Kitchener
- Westmount Road East at Forest Hill Public School, Kitchener
- Weber Street East near Eastwood Collegiate Institute, Kitchener
- Bridge Street West at Bridgeport Public School, Kitchener
- University Avenue West at Resurrection Catholic Secondary School, Kitchener
- Fischer-Hallman Road at Forest Heights Collegiate Institute, Kitchener
- Weber Street East at Sheppard Public School, Kitchener
- Dundas Street North at Manchester Public School, Cambridge
- Water Street North at Galt Collegiate Institute, Cambridge
- Maple Grove Road at Ecole Secondaire Catholique Pere-Rene-De-Galinee, Cambridge
- Myers Road at Monsignor Doyle Catholic Secondary School and Cambridge Christian School, Cambridge
- Hergott Road at Countryside Christian School, Wellesley Township
- Manser Road near Linwood Public School, Wellesley Township
- Erb Street West at Kitchener-Waterloo Bilingual School, Waterloo
- Weber Street North at St. David Catholic Secondary School, Waterloo
“The proposed changes aim to enhance safety and reduce traffic-related risks for vulnerable road users, particularly in school zones, by encouraging slower travel speeds in these critical areas,” reads the report.
Other recommendations include adding and expanding school zones and modifying speed limits. Two new school zones would be added in Woolwich Township at Arthur Street North and North Woolwich Parochial School, and on Katherine Street at West Montrose Parochial School.
A speed reduction from 60 km/h to 40 km/h is being suggested for Fairway Road in Kitchener, and 50 km/h to 40 km/h for Maple Grove Road in Cambridge and Manser Road in Wellesley.
Boundary extensions are being recommended on Victoria Street South at Sandhills Public School and St. Dominic Savio Catholic School in Kitchener, as well as Snyder’s Road West at Sir Adam Beck Public School and Waterloo Oxford District Secondary School in Baden.
Staff are recommending that changes take effect on May 26, before the speed cameras are added in the third quarter of this year.
The report will be presented on Tuesday.
