Snowfall warning issued for winter storm Wednesday night

Environment Canada is warning that a winter storm is on its way to Waterloo Region with 15 to 25 centimetres of snow possible.

According to the latest weather alert, significant snowfall will develop late Wednesday afternoon and the heaviest snow will fall during the evening hours.

There’s the potential for peak snowfall rates of 2 to 4 cm per hour, which will impact the evening commute.

“Rapidly accumulating snow will make travel difficult. There may be a significant impact on rush hour traffic in urban areas,” the weather agency said.

The snow may become mixed with freezing rain or ice pellets early Thursday morning before the conditions gradually taper off.

As of early Tuesday evening, both a snowfall warning and a special weather statement were in effect for Waterloo Region because of the incoming storm.

Areas further north of Waterloo Region are seeing significantly higher estimated snow totals of 20 to 40 centimeters. The weather agency is calling the system “highly impactful” and warns the strong low-pressure system is going to dump a lot of snow across Ontario.
