Residents are urging local politicians and community members to come together and improve the safety of a hazardous intersection in Cambridge.
It’s the intersection of Branchton Road and Dundas Street South in the southern part of Cambridge, just as the road becomes Highway 8 heading to and from the Hamilton area.
The petition, started by Cambridge resident Esmeralda Tavares, is nearing its goal of 500 signatures.
“Your signature can save lives,” said Tavares in the description of the petition.
The petition notes the hazards residents in the area face at that intersection every day, like commuters accelerating near Branchton Road as they access Highway 8, making it nearly impossible to turn left onto Dundas Street.
“These incidents are predominantly brought about by the reckless disregard for the speed limit by many motorists commuting through this intersection,” said Tavares.
She wants to increase safety and reduce the number of accidents in the area by introducing a traffic light near or at that intersection.
Some who signed the petition say they would prefer to see a roundabout installed there instead.
