Fire breaks out at Cambridge property, discussed at council the same day

It was a busy day for a property in Galt.
Multiple crews extinguished a fire 46 Park Hill Road Tuesday morning, and later it was on the council agenda for a heritage designation.
The discussion was about the owners objection to the heritage designation. They want to tear it down to build a three-storey building with 10 housing units and three commercial spaces.
On behalf of the owner, planning consultant Scott Patterson argued “the lifespan of the existing building has run its course.”
“We would ask council to please support the salvage plan option that has been proposed and the land owner is agreeing to,” said Patterson. “The brickwork can and will be recreated in the new building and I also suggested a commemorative plaque can be place in a suitable location acknowledging the history of the building.”
Patterson added that the fire only adds to the reason the building should be demolished.
“The building is becoming problematic in its current condition… it’s not even suitable to go inside the building,” said Patterson.
Councillor Ross Earnshaw supported the demolition, but the amendment he tabled was voted down 5-4. The final vote for the heritage designation was then approved 6-3.
