Results released from 2023 Youth Impact Survey in Waterloo Region

By CityNews Kitchener Staff

The Youth Impact Survey results have been released for 2023 and it’s a positive step in the right direction.

The Children and Youth Planning Table of Waterloo Region published the results Monday. It surveyed youths in our region from aged 9-18 about their well-being.

More youth have said they feel like they belong to their community in Waterloo Region.

71 per cent of respondents have said they feel strongly or very strongly that they belong which is slightly higher than previous year’s survey. That’s up seven per cent compared to 2021’s survey.

21 per cent of respondents have said they feel isolated which is down 10 per cent compared to 2021’s survey.

Despite the positive steps in the right direction, there are still many youth who have reported that they have faced discrimination, especially for their physical appearance.

There was also an increase in how many go to bed hungry, or go to school hungry.

The report said about 1,900 respondents took part in the survey and the information gathered is used to make things better or to find “sense making solutions.”

“The Youth Impact Survey is an incredibly valuable tool for decision makers, organizations, and anyone else in Waterloo Region. It tells us how youth are doing, what they want to see in their community, and shows us where we need to focus our efforts to make the region better not only for its youngest members – but for everyone,” said Karen Redman, Regional Chair of the Region of Waterloo.
