A new concept kicks off the KW Symphony season

The Kitchener-Waterloo (KW) Symphony is trying a new type of concert next month in an effort to include all fans of orchestra.

The event named ‘Uncomposed’ will open their season by not forcing the audience to follow any etiquette rules.

Devon Klaas, director of audience engagement with K-W Symphony told CityNews that the relaxed concert is geared toward all audiences, and comes highly requested.

“We know that there are unwritten rules of social etiquette at classical performances,” said Klaas. “It can be a big barrier to people attending from what to wear to when to clap.”

‘Uncomposed’ is designed to combat those barriers to help make first-time visitors or those who have had uncomfortable past experiences feel like they belong.

Klaas said the audience is encouraged to clap whenever they want or express themselves vocally like letting out a Bravo! She added that people can come and go as they please, wear whatever they want and eat and drink at their seats without getting a side-eye from the person sitting next to you.

“When you explicitly invite people by removing those barriers and letting them know that there will be no social etiquette enforced by staff, musicians or other audience members, it does make it a more welcoming environment to potentially try an orchestral performance for the first time,” said Klaas.

The staff and the orchestra will not be following a dress code either.

Daniel Bartholomew-Poyser will conduct the performance including a mix of classical and popular favourites like Vivaldi’s ‘Four Seasons’ and an ABBA medley.
