It's the next chapter in efforts to make schools more inclusive.
The Waterloo Region District School Board is conducting a review of the books they have in libraries.
“We recognize that some of the texts in the collections that we have are not appropriate at this point,” said WRDSB superintendent of student achieving and well-being Graham Shantz.
“What we've been able to do over the course of last year is develop a framework that we have started to implement already this year.”
The review will take place over the next few years, and any books they deem to be harmful to students or staff will be removed.
While this review only covers libraries, Shantz said he recognizes teachers will have their own collections in classrooms.
The hope is this will prompt teachers to review the literature they have in classrooms, and review them under the same lens.
