Here’s what open and closed on Canada Day in Waterloo Region

As with most statutory holidays in Canada, every business and public service is different when it comes to operating practices on the Canada Day holiday. Here are some of the most notable service changes and closures in the region:
Open
- Curbside waste collection will take place as usual, including organics and yard waste as per typical region schedules. Residential waste drop-off transfer stations however will be closed at both the Cambridge and Waterloo waste management.
- The Ken Seiling Waterloo Region Museum and Schneider Haus Historic Site will both be open from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m.
- Cooling spaces will remain open between 8:30 a.m. to 4.p.m. These can be found at 150 Main Street in Cambridge, 99 Regina Street South in Waterloo and 150 Frederick Street in Kitchener.
- The Service First Contact Centre will remain open 24/7.
- Some pharmacies, convenience stores, sit-down and fast food restaurants will all operate on a case-by-case basis, with most posting their holiday hours online.
- Most 24/7 fast food locations will follow their typical schedules.
- The Region of Waterloo International Airport’s operations will not be affected by Canada Day.
Partial service
- Grand River Transit will operate on a holiday service schedule which will be noted on all public route schedules for the day.
- MobilityPLUS transportation services will still operate Wednesday. However, those with subscribed trips will have them automatically cancelled. MobilityPLUS customers can rebook these trips by calling 519-744-2241.
- GO Transit services will operate on a restricted Saturday schedule, meaning limited train service on the Kitchener GO line, and specialized bus schedules. All holiday GO Transit schedules can be found on their website.
Closed
- All Regional administrative offices will be closed in the tri-cities, specifically those at 99 Regina St. S. in Waterloo, 150 Frederick St. in Kitchener, and 150 Main St. in Cambridge
- Home child care offices will be closed, and licensed care will operate as specified by providers. Those with urgent issues should call 519-575-4400 and ask for Home Child Care.
- All Region of Waterloo libary branches will be closed.
- Administration for Sunnyside Seniors’ services as well as the Sunnyside Wellncess Centre will be closed.
- Community Alzheimer day programs in the tri-cities will be closed, however overnight stay will remain open.
- Welcome spaces at 99 Regina Street South in Waterloo, 20 Weber Street East in Kitchener and 150 Main Street in Cambridge will all be closed.
- Most major retail stores, grocery stores and banks will all be closed, but each should have their hours posted definitively on their websites.
